Congratulatory message of the Artsakh Republic National Assembly President, Artur Tovmasyan, Dedicated to the 35th Anniversary of the Artsakh National Liberation Struggle, the Karabakh Movement
20 February 2023

Dear compatriots,

I congratulate all of us on the 35th anniversary of the Karabakh national liberation struggle, the Karabakh movement.

Indeed, the movement had epoch-making significance in mapping, predetermining the vision of its future, in terms of presenting a lifestyle free and independent from decades of subjugation. Rewinding our memories to the events of 1988, once again we are excited and proud of the nationwide awakening initiated by the Artsakh generation of Soviet times.

The only way out and guarantee to preserve its national identity and avoid further ethnic assimilation was to reunify with the Motherland.

The legal and political peak of the Karabakh movement fell on this day 35 years ago. Expressing the will and desire of the absolute majority of the population of the Armenian Autonomous Territory, the deputies of the regional council of the highest representative body of Nagorno-Karabakh adopted a historic decision on the secession of Nagorno-Karabakh from the Azerbaijan SSR and reunification with the Armenian SSR at the extraordinary session of the 20th convocation. With this decision, the national liberation movement of Artsakh entered the legal dimension.

However, contrary to the peaceful realization of the constitutional right of our people to self-determination, Azerbaijan was guided by the option of using force to solve the problem.

The legal and political peak of the Karabakh movement fell on this day 35 years ago. Expressing the will and desire of the absolute majority of the population of the Armenian Autonomous Territory, the deputies of the regional council of the highest representative body of Nagorno-Karabakh adopted a historic decision on the secession of Nagorno-Karabakh from the Azerbaijan SSR and reunification with the Armenian SSR. With this decision, the national liberation movement of Artsakh entered the legal dimension at the extraordinary session of the 20th convocation.

However, contrary to the peaceful realization of the constitutional right of our people to self-determination, Azerbaijan was guided by the option of using force to solve the problem.

The 3 wars unleashed by Azerbaijan reaffirmed the insidious intentions of the Azerbaijani military-political leadership: Artsakh without Armenians.

Over three and a half decades, we have gone through gains and losses. Thousands of Armenians sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the freedom and independence of Artsakh. Wounded Artsakh today continues to live at the cost of those sacrifices.

The spirit of the February national renaissance infused with the spirit of struggle and the blood and sweat shed for our motherland and statehood in the present days, they should be an impetus for new memories for us. That is the formula for the vitality and longevity of the people of Artsakh.

The problems facing the Artsakh Republic deepened in the post-war period.

Among the priorities is the recovery of the paralyzed economy and infrastructure. However, from December 12, 2022, when Azerbaijan took Artsakh under siege, the implementation of those plans was disrupted. Azerbaijan has caused an unprecedented humanitarian disaster in Artsakh, aiming to depopulate Artsakh.

I am sure that we will overcome these artificial difficulties as well.

Dear compatriots,

Our national pride is inexhaustible. No one can disrupt it. We are determined in our fight. The will of an Artsakh citizen to live and create in his historical homeland is unshakable.
